Goat House Refuge

WE ARE CURRENTLY AT CAPACITY

Although the refuge is operating at full capacity, please fill out the intake form so that we can offer you more options or place you on the waiting list. Also, please see alternatives below for other shelters to contact. Thank you.

If you find that you are having trouble affording veterinary care, please read this article from The Humane Society for ideas on how to help with veterinary costs.

Click here if you live in Orange, Wake, Durham, Person or Caswell County and believe your income is low enough to qualify for a $20 fix (spay or neuter). You will need to complete the application, get approval, receive a voucher, and then make an appointment with an approved provider.

If you live in Chatham County, please click here for the $20 fix information through C.A.R.E.

If you live in Alamance County, please click here for the Humane Society's information and low cost program.

Although we may not be able to take your cat, you can still have a listing on our "Urgent" page on this website, and be listed on petfinder.com under our account. We will need a picture and a short biography, with your phone or email as contact. Please send those pics and bios here.

There are many things you can do to find your animal a good home. Here is some info below, but the two most important things to ensure a safe, responsible home are: 1) ask for references from any potential adopters and check them, and 2) always ask for a small fee for "vet expenses" because that will exclude dishonest people looking for free animals to sell to animal research laboratories, to train fighting dogs to kill plus many other bad things.

Above all, please do not take your animal to a kill shelter, as North Carolina has one of the highest euthanasia rates in the country, at about 9 out of 10 animals going into shelters are euthanized. Additionally, "owner surrenders" or peoples' pets can be euthanized immediately, and don't have to be held for the "stray period" of 3-5 days before euthanasia.

Here are some ideas to help you find a safe home for the animal:

Start our intake process - it will help you place the animal no matter whom you contact, a refuge or an individual.

Second, please contact local vets and other rescue groups to list your animal.

Put flyers up in vet offices and anywhere else you can. Ask vet assistants and vet techs if any of them foster (some of them do). Some vets also do their own rescue work and may assist you in placing this animal.

Send us a picture, bio and contact numbers/email for a listing on our Urgent page. We will also put you on petfinder.com.
