Save the Goathouse – the Shooting Range next door is terrifying our animals. Sign the Petition!

Noise hurts baby earsRecently, the parcel of land right next to the Goathouse Refuge was sold and the new owner has built an outdoor shooting range. IT’S SO LOUD! They shoot all day long and it terrifies the animals at the Refuge. So sad…these animals have lost their homes, been dumped in shelters, but we’ve been able to give them a second chance. Now, thanks to the shooting range next door, they are terrified again. It also causes us great concern due to the environmental impact of lead and noise, as well as safety issues for our staff and visitors.

We’re asking our friends to sign an online petition to the Chatham County Board of Commissioners to Save our Refuge. We’ve been on this property for YEARS. Why would anyone implement such a hurtful, uncaring action and build RIGHT NEXT DOOR to an animal sanctuary?

Write letters and emails to the Chatham County Board of Commissioners, letters like this one, written by a Goathouse supporter to Commissioner Pam Stewart (District 4).

Good morning, Ms. Stewart:

This heartfelt letter is to express my concern for the Goathouse Refuge and how the gun range is causing stress to the rescues who live there. I’m all about the second amendment and am a gun owner myself. However, there are plenty of shooting ranges around, but there is only one Goathouse. This is a well run and well maintained facility by a true steward and her volunteers who work tirelessly to make this a place where cats and other animals call home, if not temporarily, but many for the rest of their lives. Not only is Goathouse is a beautiful and peaceful refuge for animals, but it’s also a place where people can explore the grounds and find peace and solace. How can this intrusion be good for neighbors and wildlife in the area?

As an elected official, please take responsibility, step up and do the right thing for the greater good. Have you visited the Goathouse? If not, I strongly encourage it. This beautiful place, a true refuge for animals and people alike is becoming an environment of high anxiety and the soundtrack to a war zone. It’s not too late to make a difference. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

Respectfully yours.
